Evaluates Brush Extended-Life Heads
Operators of the famed Paris rapid transit system constantly search for ways to improve the performance of their high-traffic magnetic head installations. In 1992, the French laboratory Regie Autonome des Transports Parisiens (RATP), was contacted by Brush Industries. Brush proposed the use of their magnetic heads as a way for the Paris Metro to increase the mean cycles Between failures (MCBF) and reduce operating costs.
After laboratory testing and evaluations, the RATP has determined that ceramic-coated Brush Supermium® heads exceed the performance of the product currently used by a factor of four. Operating experiments are ongoing. (Results of wear testing By RATP can be seen in the accompanying graph).
Supermium® is a proprietary Sendust (iron-silicon-aluminum) alloy that has been further refined by Brush since its introduction in 1987. According to an independent university study, ceramic-coated Supermium® heads have more than 100 times the life expectancy of heads with mu metal cores. Long-life heads from Brush maintain gap
integrity throughout their lifespans. Wear rates are predictable, and MCBF
is extended. These factors combine to produce highly reliable,
cost-effective magnetic heads for high-traffic installations.
