The transit authority uses three, high-speed encoders to prepare millions of tickets. The paper tickets are very abrasive, especially in their first pass state. MARTA had found that the high-speed encoders rapidly wore out typical heads. The major OEM that supplies MARTA with fare collection equipment, such as gates, ticket encoders, and credit card readers, contacted Brush. Brush developed extended-life heads for MARTA's equipment; the ceramic-coated Supermium® heads were installed in 1991 and evaluated between 1991 and 1993. |
MARTA's electronic lab, in Decatur, Georgia provided the following data about the Brush heads.

In its memo regarding the November 19, 1993 data, MARTA stated that "The heads were inspected for wear By the maintenance foreman and he reports, 'no sign of wear, at all.'"
According to Jim Marcusky, MARTA Senior Mechanical Engineer, "We are very pleased with the performance of the Brush heads. They don't seem to show any sign of wear."
