The Hercules Hardened Manual Insertion Reader, built for hostile environments, reads magnetic stripes on cards and reads from and writes to an integrated circuit (IC) on the card (Smart Card). 

The magnetic stripe on the card is read in both the forward and reverse directions. The IC reads or writes data only in the fully seated position. 

The Hercules conforms to both ANSI and ISO magnetic card formats, and the IC card reader is available for ISO 7816 & 7816-2 transitional contact locations. 

The interface logic for the IC card is TTL level (direct to contacts) and for the magnetic card is TTL level. The Hercules is available to read 2-track and 3-track magnetic stripe configurations, and to read and write to the IC.
